NSW:Goat farmer found dead on his property
SYDNEY, April 28 AAP - A man missing after setting out to muster goats has been found
dead on his rugged property in NSW's far southwest.
The 52-year-old set off from a homestead on Ivanhoe Road, Balranald, with two other
people at 1pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
The trio split up and spread across the property on motorbikes to muster the goats.
The man failed to return home that night and the other two began searching for him
in rugged terrain only accessible on foot or by motorbike.
They were joined by a police trail bike unit, volunteer rescue crews and local people
but the search was abandoned about 9.55pm.
It was resumed shortly before 11am (AEST) on Thursday and the man was discovered about
two hours later, about five kilometres into bushland.
He was next to his motorbike which appeared to have crashed, police said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner outlining the full circumstances of his death,
they said.

FED:Ministerial row over Thomson phone calls
Labor has gone on the attack over revelations of a series of phone calls about embattled
government MP CRAIG THOMSON.
Federal frontbencher CRAIG EMERSON says it's curious that shadow attorney-general GEORGE
BRANDIS put in a call to NSW Police Minister MIKE GALLACHER over the issue.
He says Senator BRANDIS should have known the sensitivities of the matter, given that
NSW Premier BARRY O'FARRELL had last weekend called for Mr THOMSON'S sacking.
After he spoke to Senator BRANDIS, Mr GALLACHER then called police commissioner ANDREW
SCIPIONE, but a spokesman for Mr GALLACHER today denied any wrongdoing in the calls, saying
the issue of Mr THOMSON was mentioned only in passing.
The federal Labor MP is embroiled in allegations over his alleged use of a union credit
card, including paying for prostitutes, in his former role as secretary of the Health
Services Union.

QLD:Pool laws relaxed to help flood victims
Queensland is delaying the enforcement of new pool safety laws for six months .. with
fears they may further constricted the rental market.
Premier ANNA BLIGH says the delay is a practicality in the aftermath of the floods
and Cyclone Yasi .. as reconstruction and rebuilding come first.
Ms BLIGH says people with extensive damage to their homes need to be rehoused .. and
the state can't afford rental properties to remain vacant while owners wait for a pool
safety certificate.
The laws came into effect in December .. and require mandatory safety inspections while
giving safety inspectors greater powers of entry to undertake checks.
Ms BLIGH says Queensland's statutory land valuations .. due to be issued next month
.. will also be delayed for three months until the effects of the disasters can be fully
assessed.

FED:We'll renovate Labor tradition: Gillard
CANBERRA, Aug 31 AAP - Prime Minister Julia Gillard has pledged to renovate Labor's
tradition to make lasting improvements to Australian democracy.
With the Australian Electoral Commission's two-party preferred count oscillating between
Labor and the coalition, Ms Gillard's claims to legitimacy have been tested.
But in a 26-minute speech to the National Press Club, she pledged to make changes if
Labor retained power in a hung parliament, without spelling out specific details.
"I want to renovate that Labor tradition, to deliver lasting and durable improvements
to our democracy, improvements not just for this parliamentary term, but measures to permanently
uplift our system of government as other reforms have done in generations past," she said.
With three rural independents - Tony Windsor, Bob Katter and Rob Oakeshott - deciding
who will form the next government, Ms Gillard took a veiled swipe at the coalition for
claiming they better understood regional Australia.
"Let me assure Australians, there is no scramble on the Labor side," Ms Gillard said.
"We don't have to rediscover regional Australia - because we never lost it."

Vic: Witness had dire thoughts for little girl lost
EDS: Note language in eighth par
By Jeff Turnbull
MELBOURNE, Dec 9 AAP - "Go home little girl, you are in grave danger" - that was the
thought that flashed through Edith Jamieson's mind when she saw Linda Stilwell playing
by herself on the St Kilda foreshore 41 years ago.
The danger she sensed was Derek Ernest Percy.
Ms Jamieson saw a man with a "skeletal face" watching Linda play and later identified
him as Percy when she saw his photograph in a newspaper in connection with another murder
- that of 12-year-old Yvonne Tuohy 12 months later.
He has since been linked to many of Australia's most notorious child killings and has
been in prison for 40 years over Yvonne's murder.
"It hit me like a thunderbolt - I recognised the face in the Herald," Ms Jamieson told
a coronial inquest into the disappearance and death of Linda.
Ms Jamieson was the last person to see seven-year-old Linda alive and to this day has
not forgotten the busy Saturday scene on the seafront in August, 1968.
Percy admitted to former school friend and policeman Ronald Anderson he was in the
area on the day and Deputy State Coroner Iain West on Wednesday found that on the balance
of probability, he was in the St Kilda vicinity.
Mr Anderson on Wednesday told the inquest that when he went to the City Watchhouse
to speak with him in 1969, Percy said to him: "I've really f***ed up this time, Ron".
When Mr Anderson asked Percy if he had murdered Linda Stilwell, he replied: "I don't remember".
He told Mr Anderson he'd been in Adelaide when the three Beaumont children disappeared
in January 1966 and had driven past the spot where three-year-old Simon Brook was murdered
in Sydney in 1968.
When Mr Anderson asked Percy if he killed the Beaumonts, Percy replied: "I could have
killed them, I don't remember a thing".
"At the time, Derek seemed remorseful for himself but didn't seem to indicate any remorse
for the victims," Mr Anderson told the Coroner's Court.
Two months out of training, Mr Anderson was called in by homicide detectives "to try
to find out what made Percy tick" after Percy had been arrested for the murder of Yvonne
Tuohy, whose throat and stomach had been slashed.
Ms Jamieson gave her harrowing account while holding back tears and said that when
she saw Linda she believed the infant was in great danger.
"Go home little girl, you are in grave danger," Ms Jamieson said to herself as she
watched Linda play.
She saw Linda rolling down the grassy slope near the beach and saw a man "with a skeletal
face" close by sitting on a bench looking out to sea.
"I took that whole scene in and it has stayed with me forever," she told the inquest.
Ms Jamieson had three children of her own on the beach that day and wanted to get back
to them, because she felt they were also in danger.
The Stilwell family's lawyer, Elizabeth McKinnon, urged the coroner to take into account
that Percy has been placed at other child murders around Australia.
But Mr West said there were no witnesses to the Beaumonts' disappearance or the murder
of Simon Brook, while Ms Jamieson had identified a man who looked like Percy at the scene.
The inquest is continuing, with Percy expected to be called to give evidence on Thursday.

WA: Fremantle lead export recommendation slammed
PERTH, Dec 10 AAP - A recommendation by Western Australia's environmental watchdog
to allow lead concentrate to be shipped through Fremantle has been slammed by the port
town and a conservation group.
Magellan Metals, the company at the centre of the Esperance lead contamination crisis,
had applied to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to export the lead from its Wiluna
mine through Fremantle.
Magellan was stopped from shipping the product through Esperance after if was discovered
lead dust was escaping into the town and leading to high lead blood levels among parts
of the population, including some children.
The EPA today gave its in principle go ahead for the export through Fremantle, subject
to environmental conditions.
Fremantle mayor Peter Tagliaferri said the shipments would greatly increase the amount
of hazardous cargo going through the port.
"This intensifies the risk profile significantly, it's too big a risk to take," Mr
Tagliaferri said.
The lead would be sealed in bulk bags and loaded into shipping containers, while an
independent inspector would check whether lead dust was escaping from bags as they left
Magellan's mine in Wiluna.
Mr Tagliaferri said the town of Fremantle had not been consulted about an Emergency
Response Plan flagged by the EPA.
Conservation Council of WA director Chris Tallentire said Magellan had a shocking history
with lead exports and should not be allowed to export the product at all.
"The EPA doesn't take a look at the bigger picture, doesn't take a look at cumulative
impacts, doesn't look at the history of companies like Magellan," Mr Tallentire said.
"It seems to be locked in a mindset that allows it to look at each individual proposal
as it comes through."
Mr Tallentire said the EPA needed to send a clear message that Magellan's behaviour
was unacceptable.
The EPA report will be sent to Environment Minister David Templeman, who will make
the final decision on the proposal.

NSW: Millions in unclaimed cash waiting for a home, govt says
SYDNEY, Dec 27 AAP - Almost 225,000 people are missing out on a personal dividend,
windfall or entitlement that could be theirs at a keystroke, the NSW government says.
More than $100 million in unclaimed cash is sitting in the state government's coffers,
including $761,000 from one deceased estate.
Treasurer Michael Costa says people wondering if they are eligible for a belated Christmas
gift should log onto the OSR website to make inquiries and lodge a claim.
He said the NSW Office of State Revenue (OSR) is holding $105.9 million in unclaimed
money, believed to be owned by 224,800 people from across NSW, Australia and countries
such as the UK and Ireland.
The money, from deceased estates, dividends, inactive superannuation accounts and the
like, is sent to the OSR to be held until collected by its rightful owners.
"These items range in value from a $20 NRMA share dividend to more than $761,000 from
a deceased estate," Mr Costa said.
"Over a lifetime a person might work in several jobs and forget they paid superannuation
into several funds.
"Other people change addresses and don't advise companies of the change.
"The website is free and it's easy to navigate. It's your money and you're entitled to claim it."
In 2006, the OSR paid 3,981 claims worth $6.7 million, including one Perth resident
reunited with $18,400 in lost superannuation.
The OSR website shows the name of the money's owner, the type and source of the funds,
and the owner's last known address.

Qld:Gambling addict academic jailed for theft
BRISBANE, Aug 18 AAP - An academic whose job led him to develop a gambling habit has
been jailed for 15 months for stealing more than $220,000.
Qian Ming Zeng, 42, pleaded guilty in the Queensland District Court in Brisbane to
14 fraud-related offences committed between November 2003 and June 2005.
Chinese-born Zeng migrated to Australia in 1998 and from 2001 was employed by IAE Study
in Australia, which operates an international education office helping overseas students
seeking to study here.
He was employed by the Fortitude Valley company as a consultant who helped students
pay their tuition fees.
The court was told part of Zeng's job was to entertain the students and their families
when they came to Brisbane.
They would often ask to gamble at the casino, because gambling is prohibited in mainland
China, and would give Zeng money to join in.
Eventually this developed into a gambling habit and Zeng kept students' tuition fees,
instead of passing them onto the company.
The court was told Zeng confessed the theft to the company, but fled to China because
loan sharks were after him and he feared for his life.
Zeng eventually contacted the Australian Federal Police and voluntarily returned to Brisbane.
Zeng was formerly vice-dean of the English department at a teachers' college in China,
and completed an MBA at Griffith University when he migrated to Australia.
