WASHINGTON -- Buffalo, North Tonawanda and the towns of Tonawandaand Wheatfield will get $926,000 in housing aid, Rep. John J.LaFalce, D-Town of Tonawanda, announced Friday.
The grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York includes:
$444,474 toward repair of 64 units in five buildings between the2100 and 2500 blocks on Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, sponsored byCommunity Services Programs.
$378,100 toward 76 low-income senior units at Canterbury Gardens,7200 Williams Road, Wheatfield. The sponsor is Episcopal CommunityHousing.
$48,500 for housing for five disabled people at 4441 TonawandaCreek Road, North Tonawanda, sponsored by Heritage Christian Home.
$28,750 to help acquire and repair a house at 172 Main St., Townof Tonawanda, for disabled adults, sponsored by Heritage ChristianHome.
$26,082 toward seven units of emergency housing at the KenmoreShelter, 590 Kenmore Ave., Town of Tonawanda.
Sports facility to offer media training
The Johnnie B. Wiley Sports Pavilion is inviting youths andadults to participate in three new training programs this spring atthe facility at 1100 Jefferson Ave. near Best Street.
Rookie Sports Reports is a media-training program for high schoolstudents. Participants will cover Little League football andbaseball games, learning broadcasting, sportswriting, photographyand statistics-keeping skills under the guidance of professionaljournalists. Broadcast equipment will be provided and the broadcastswill be aired on public access channels. Student-produced articleswill run in community newspapers.
In addition, the Wiley Sports Pavilion offers math and Englishtutoring for students in grades 8-12 from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays. The center offers basic computer andInternet classes for adults and youth in grades 8-12 on Tuesdays andThursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Volker to address Chamber breakfast
State Sen. Dale M. Volker will be the guest speaker at theHamburg Chamber of Commerce's 28th annual civic breakfast at 8 a.m.April 19 in Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant, 3785 South Park Ave.,Blasdell.
Volker, R-Depew, was first elected to the Assembly in 1972, andthree years later won a special election to the State Senate. Afterhis appointment as chairman of the standing Committee on Codes in1987, he has helped shape criminal justice policy for the state.

Man faces fraud charge in theft report
A Depew man has been charged with insurance fraud for allegedlyfalsely reporting the theft of a $6,000 boat and trailer,Cheektowaga police said Friday.
Nicholas Ciraolo, 35, of Jessica Lane, surrendered Thursday andwas charged with insurance fraud and falsely reporting an incidentfor claiming in September 1999 that the boat had been stolen fromhis yard, police said.
He collected on the insurance, and the boat and trailer werelater recovered in Franklinville. Police received information thatthey had been fraudulently reported as stolen, according to aninvestigation by Cheektowaga Detective Mark Jedd, Edward Silvestriniof the state Insurance Fraud Bureau and Robert McCue of HarleysvilleInsurance Co.
1 killed, 3 hurt in Newfane collision
NEWFANE -- One person died and three others were injured in ahead-on collision Friday afternoon on Coomer Road, Niagara Countysheriff's deputies said.
Deputies were called shortly before 3:40 p.m. about an accidentin front of 2298 Coomer. Two cars had collided after the driver ofthe northbound car apparently crossed into the oncoming lane,deputies said.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, another wasairlifted to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, and two weretaken to Newfane Inter-Community Memorial Hospital. Police withheldthe victims' names pending notification of their families.
Specialist offers counseling on housing
A housing specialist will be at Hamburg Town Hall from 3 to 5p.m. April 10 to field questions about housing issues and Hamburg'sfair-housing ordinance.
Anne Huiner, community education specialist from HOME (HousingOpportunities Made Equal), is available in Town Hall, 6100 SouthPark Ave., every second Wednesday of the month. She providesindividual paralegal counseling on topics ranging from securitydeposits to evictions and tenant screening to fair housing.

Paleontological center receives grant
M&T Bank Charitable Foundation has donated $2,500 to the HamburgNatural History Society to help support the educational programs atthe Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center inHamburg.
More than 240 programs and events provided by the society lastyear drew a 36 percent increase in attendance over 2000. Penn Dixiesite visits, programs and exhibits were attended by more than 54,000children and adults last year.
