QLD: Building industry told to improve safety
BRISBANE, April 11 AAP - Queensland's building and construction industry has been ordered
to improve worker safety because of an unacceptable level of fatalities and injuries.
Chairman of the Building and Construction Industry (Workplace Health and Safety) taskforce,
John Crittall said the fatality rate of 12 workers killed per 100,000 was twice the national
average for all workers which stood at 5.5.
Mr Crittall said two papers have been released focussing on the construction industry
and the housing sector.
"The purpose is to identify key reasons and the obstacles preventing compliance with
workplace health and safety requirement," he said.
Mr Crittall said the taskforce was exploring additional hazard based regulations including
ladders, trestles, excavating and trenching, working at height, underground services and
housekeeping of sites.
